What Size Bonding Wire For 200 Amp Service

Ground wire guess needed for 200A service?

Looking to upgrade our 100A service to 200A. Final time the electric inspector was out for a split up inspection, he said we'd demand to pull a larger ground wire if increasing to 200A just 150A and 100A share the same approximate basis wire.

NEC seems to state a 6 AWG ground is needed for 200A service, and that's what nosotros currently take just I have also seen some comments about using a 4AWG for 200A or else extra protection of some kind is needed. Anyone know which is for sure needed for 200A service?

For 200A services, you only need #6 copper for supplemental grounding (footing rods). Bonding (water and gas) and Ufer grounds require #four copper.

This is the problem with proverb "footing" instead of being specific. I am guilty of this as well... You're looking upwards the wrong "ground."

Equipment Grounding Conductor (ECG) for 200a is 6awg copper.

Grounding Electrode Conductor (GEC) for 200a is required to exist 4awg copper.

Technically it'due south based on the service wire sizing, but in the vast majority of cases the above sizing will exist correct.

Ok thanks! So to ostend, the grounding wire running from main console to inlet of water piping downstairs is the GEC? Appreciate the assistance

Bonding for 200 amp = #4 copper Grounding Electrode 200 amp min. #6 copper

Mistake #i never 2d guess the Authority having jurisdiction, if you plan on ever getting power re connected. Delight remember that the NEC is a minimum standard, but each location has the ability to require more.
